School Mascots

The State of California was the first state to ban the name "Redskins" being used for mascots at schools. Native Americans highly appreciated this act. This act can be an example to other states and used as a precedent to encourage other states to follow California's example. In studies, it is found that many high schools throughout the country use Native American names and slurs for their mascot. Many organizations are trying to get the Washing NFL team to change their name as well.

I think that it is great how California is making a huge change in banning Native Americans as mascots. California is a huge state and this change can make an impact across our country. It will be huge if other states started joining in. Native Americans as mascots is degrading to the Natives and makes it discriminating. It is still an issue we must face and overcome today.
